In a significant escalation of tensions, the Syrian military has successfully taken control of the largest oil field in the country from Kurdish forces. This strategic move comes as Syrian troops have engaged in intense combat with Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the northeastern region of Syria. According to officials and monitoring organizations, the Omar oil facility, along with adjacent gas fields, is now firmly under the control of the Syrian army following the SDF's withdrawal. Prior to this, the Syrian forces captured the crucial Tabqa dam situated on the Euphrates River.
This offensive unfolded after the SDF declared its intention to reposition itself east of the Euphrates River, a decision prompted by deadly confrontations that occurred the previous week. This shift followed discussions with officials from the United States, highlighting the complex dynamics at play in the region.
The ongoing conflict can be traced back to a collapsed agreement between the SDF and the government led by President Ahmed al-Sharaa. Al-Sharaa is actively working to integrate Kurdish groups into the broader structures of Syrian governance. In a surprising display of goodwill, he recently announced plans to elevate the status of the Kurdish language to that of a national language and to declare the Kurdish new year as an official holiday. This decree marks the first formal acknowledgment of Kurdish national rights since Syria gained independence in 1946.
Following these developments, the SDF confirmed its decision to withdraw to positions east of the Euphrates River. For many years, Kurdish forces have held control over substantial portions of Syria’s oil-rich northern and northeastern territories, primarily acquired during the decade-long battle against the Islamic State group.
Over the weekend, Syrian troops continued their advance, entering the town of Tabqa, located on the southwestern bank of the Euphrates, as well as the nearby dam. By Sunday, officials reported that they had seized control of the Omar oil field, situated on the eastern bank of the river, which has been a critical revenue source for the SDF.
The claims of the Syrian government were corroborated by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based monitoring organization, which reported that the SDF had retreated from "entire villages and towns in the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor province," including the Omar and Tanak oil fields early on Sunday.
In a related turn of events, Syrian authorities accused the SDF of detonating two bridges spanning the Euphrates River, including the newly constructed al-Rashid bridge in Raqqa. Last week witnessed violent clashes in the northern city of Aleppo, resulting in at least 12 fatalities among combatants from both sides.
This renewed outbreak of fighting persists despite ongoing efforts by the United States to mediate a ceasefire. Historically, Washington has provided support to the SDF while also backing the Syrian government. Following the removal of the long-standing leader Bashar al-Assad in late 2024, President al-Sharaa has been striving for the integration of Kurdish military and civilian entities within Syria’s national framework. In March 2025, the SDF and the Syrian government signed an agreement aimed at promoting this integration; however, nearly a year later, implementation remains stalled, with both parties attributing the lack of progress to the other's actions.
