Nationals in Shadow Ministry: Mass Resignation in Solidarity (2026)

Eight Nationals in Shadow Ministry Resign in Solidarity Over Hate Laws

In a dramatic turn of events, eight Nationals in the shadow ministry have resigned in solidarity with three senior colleagues who were dropped from the frontbench for opposing new hate laws. This mass exodus, following the lead of Senators Bridget McKenzie, Susan McDonald, and Ross Cadell, has sparked speculation about another potential Coalition split.

The Nationals' decision comes after Opposition Leader Sussan Ley accepted the resignations of the three senators who crossed the floor on the hate legislation. This move was a direct response to the trio's defiance of the shadow cabinet's agreed position on the issue.

Nationals Leader David Littleproud had warned that a mass resignation would occur if the Opposition Leader accepted the resignations of the three shadow cabinet ministers. And that's exactly what happened.

In a statement, Ms. Ley acknowledged the difficult situation, emphasizing the importance of shadow cabinet solidarity. She stated, "Last night, three Nationals senators were unable to maintain that shadow cabinet solidarity. This is an unfortunate circumstance that requires action."

The eight remaining Nationals in the shadow ministry, including Shadow Assistant Treasurer Pat Conaghan, followed through on their threat, sending their resignations to Ms. Ley. Conaghan expressed his opposition to the hate laws, stating, "While I and my National Party colleagues fully support the intent of the legislation, we do not support the rushed iteration that has been presented."

Despite the controversy, the Nationals' party room resolved to quit their positions, citing the importance of adhering to shadow cabinet decisions as a foundational principle. Senator Cadell, who was prepared to be sacked or resign, emphasized the need for accountability, stating, "I can't do the crime if I'm not prepared to do the time."

This development raises questions about the future of the Coalition and the impact of internal divisions on the party's ability to govern effectively. As the Nationals continue to navigate this challenging period, the focus now shifts to how the party will move forward and whether this crisis will strengthen or weaken the Coalition's unity.
