In response to this unusual inquiry, Slot chuckled and labeled it as "one of the weirdest questions" he had encountered, even making light of the situation by joking that Alonso had called him to announce plans to take over in six months—perhaps even sooner. This exchange took place just before Liverpool secured a decisive 3-0 win against Marseille in the Champions League.
While the club did not pursue any action against the reporter who posed the question about Alonso, Van Dijk felt compelled to address it post-match. He emphasized, "That (question) was disrespectful," reinforcing the notion that while criticism of their performance this season is warranted, particularly in light of last season's challenges, it should be directed appropriately.
Van Dijk acknowledged the difficulties faced throughout the season but commended Slot for managing these challenges effectively. He praised the team's recent match against Marseille as one of their most "complete performances" of the season, marking a personal milestone as he became the 50th player in Liverpool's history to make 350 appearances for the club. "Playing my 350th game, winning 3-0, and keeping a clean sheet, is something I take great pride in," remarked the 34-year-old defender.
The Reds are currently in a solid position to secure a top-eight finish in the league phase, which would allow them to advance directly to the last-16 in March, thus bypassing the knockout playoff round scheduled for February.
