Jaecoo J5 EV Review: Affordable Luxury Electric SUV Under $40k? | Full Test Drive & Features (2026)

Prepare to be amazed by the Jaecoo J5 EV, an electric SUV that's turning heads and challenging expectations! With a starting price of just $36,990 driveaway, this adventure-focused vehicle is an absolute game-changer in the world of electric cars.

Back in December 2025, Jaecoo, a sub-brand of the renowned Chinese automotive giant Chery, unveiled the J5 EV, along with an incredible launch offer for the first 2,000 customers. I had the privilege of getting an early taste of this car's potential during a test drive in Sydney, and now, after spending a week with it, I'm here to share my insights.

The J5 EV exudes a European charm, with its squared-off grille and sleek design. It's a far cry from your typical sub-$40k SUV, and its premium look is a testament to Jaecoo's focus on quality and adventure. The exterior boasts curves in all the right places, and even the smallest details, like the LED lighting and 18-inch aero wheels, contribute to its modern and rugged appeal.

Step inside, and you'll be greeted by a spacious and comfortable interior. The massive glass moonroof, spanning an impressive 1.45 square meters, adds to the sense of openness. With a sunshade, you can control the amount of light flooding in, creating a bright and airy environment. At the heart of the front dashboard is a 13.2-inch vertical screen, serving as the command center for most of the car's functions. A few essential buttons, like the hazard lights and drive mode selector, are conveniently located underneath.

One of Jaecoo's standout features is its pet-friendly approach. The seats are crafted from a synthetic silicone material called Super EcoClean Skin, designed to resist scratches and stains. After a week of coastal adventures and coffee runs, I can vouch for its easy-clean nature. A simple microfiber cloth and some spray did the trick, keeping the interior looking fresh.

The J5 EV excels in terms of space and practicality. The back offers a completely flat floor, transforming it into a roomy five-seater. Even my tall friend found the rear seats comfortable during our weekend drive. Boot space is generous too, with a false floor providing two levels of storage, totaling 480 liters. And get this - it even has a 35-liter Frunk, making it one of the most useful EVs I've encountered recently. Oh, and it comes with a drain plug, so you can turn it into an esky for your camping trips!

When it comes to performance, the J5 EV packs a punch. Its 155 kW motor delivers up to 288 Nm of torque, ensuring a zippy and responsive drive. Whether you're merging onto the freeway or navigating city traffic, you'll never feel underpowered. The car sprints from 0-100 km/h in just over 7.7 seconds, making it a breeze to overtake on highways or maneuver through urban areas.

In suburban settings, the auto-hold function works like a charm, engaging with a simple press of the brake pedal. It might take some getting used to, especially if you're transitioning from a traditional automatic ICE car, but it's a small price to pay for the convenience.

On the Mornington Peninsula Freeway, the J5 EV delivers a soft and comfortable ride, meeting the expectations of most family car buyers. The suspension handles road joints and bumps with ease, although some might find the steering a bit light and lacking feedback. Personally, I found it perfectly adequate, and it's a significant improvement over many affordable EVs I've tested.

The regenerative braking system offers three settings, and while I prefer the low regen mode in the J5, I must admit that the high mode could use some refinement. There's a slight delay when lifting your foot off the accelerator, and it doesn't provide the smooth regen experience you'd expect from a Tesla. However, Jaecoo has already taken on board this feedback, and future OTA updates could address this issue.

In terms of range, the J5 EV is equipped with a 58.9 kWh LFP battery, offering an official WLTP range of 402 km. During my week of mixed driving, I achieved a real-world range of around 370 km, which is impressive. With a three-phase AC charger, you can enjoy charging speeds of up to 9.5 kW, fully charging the car in approximately 6 hours. And for those seeking faster charging, DC speeds of up to 130 kW are available, allowing for a 30-80% top-up in just 28 minutes.

Jaecoo's commitment to customer satisfaction is evident in their warranty offerings. The J5 comes with an eight-year, unlimited-kilometer vehicle warranty, eight years of capped-price servicing, and an eight-year battery warranty. It's a testament to their confidence in the product and their dedication to providing peace of mind to their customers.

Having spent a week with the Jaecoo J5 EV, my initial impressions have only strengthened. At its launch pricing, the J5 presents a compelling option in the sub-$40k electric SUV segment. It's well-equipped, comfortable, and practical, with only minor dynamic adjustments needed. If Jaecoo continues to offer sharp pricing and refine the driving experience through software updates, the J5 has the potential to become a powerhouse in Australia's burgeoning EV market.

And this is the part most people miss... Jaecoo's focus on adventure and their commitment to delivering exceptional value make the J5 EV a true trailblazer. With its impressive features, comfortable interior, and competitive pricing, it's a force to be reckoned with. So, what do you think? Is the Jaecoo J5 EV the future of electric SUVs? I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
